The main goal of the Nunavut Wildlife Health Assessment Project (NWHP) is to assess the current status of wildlife health and to investigate the potential harm to wildlife resulting from the presence of contaminants in the Arctic ecosystem. This project records historical wildlife health trends by documenting Elder's knowledge, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), and makes comparisons to the recent observations of experienced hunters. It has also established a pilot program intended to monitor current and future health conditions of wildlife through the use of hunters' observations on the health status of their regular harvests. This information has the potential, over time, to provide a valuable record that may be used to monitor future changes in wildlife health should it be influenced by the multiple stressors of contaminant exposure and climate change. NWHP also provides Northern communities with current information on the issues and potential influences of previous and ongoing contaminant exposure on wildlife health.
About this package
The teacher's resource package presented here by NWHP aims to provide educators and students of the North with current and up-to-date information specifically about contaminants in the Arctic ecosystem.
Downloads
The teacher's resource package is a PDF file. The other three files are Microsoft PowerPoint files. Click on the title to download each one. These are large files and will take some time to download, especially on slower internet connections.
