Teacher on the Tundra:
a teacher's guide to Thunder on the Tundra
Several important factors are key to determining the future of Nunavut. With the prospect of several large-scale industrial developments, Nunavummiut must balance economic development opportunities with environmental, cultural and social impacts. Today's students will be faced with many decisions as they enter into positions of leadership. As such, it is important to provide young people with some of the many skills they will need for the future.
This guide attempts to walk the students through examples where environmental, cultural and developmental issues must be balanced using Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, documented in the book Thunder on the Tundra. In this way, students will learn more of science, traditional ecological knowledge, who regulates the development process, conservation principles, what is at stake, and the issues which must be considered before a decision can be made.
The unit is designed for Grade 10 Nunavut and NWT students taking Northern Studies, although it could also be used for social studies and science classes. This teacher's guide aims to be all-encompassing. It is designed for the teacher who has the desire to make Northern Studies fun and relevant for their students. All the resources needed for delivery are included.
